The trail from Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha traverses some of the most scenic middle-hill countryside near Kathmandu, passing through mustard fields, terraced farms, and Tamang villages with Himalayan views as a backdrop.
The destination is Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, a major Buddhist pilgrimage site marking the legend of the prince who offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs — one of the most important Jataka tales in Buddhist tradition. The monastery is architecturally impressive with ornate murals and butter lamp offerings.
The full loop via the medieval Newari town of Panauti makes for an outstanding day, combining Buddhist pilgrimage, Hindu temples, and Newari heritage in one outing.
