Australian Camp is one of the easiest and most rewarding short treks near Pokhara, offering a magnificent Himalayan panorama for minimal effort. Named because it was a popular camping spot for Australian trekkers in the 1970s-80s, the wide open meadow at 2,060m provides panoramic views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Hiunchuli.
The trail from Kande (30 minutes drive from Pokhara) passes through rhododendron and oak forest, opening to a broad grassy ridge with teahouses. The rhododendron forests are spectacular in spring (March-April).
The trek can be extended to Dhampus for a satisfying loop, and serves as the first stop on the popular Poon Hill trek route. It works well as both a day hike and an overnight trip.
